An in-depth introduction to the philosophy and components of the Living Building Challenge and certification program of the International Living Future Institute. The built environment's most rigorous performance standard, the program calls for the creation of building projects at all scales that operate as cleanly, beautifully and efficiently as nature's architecture. To be certified under the Challenge, projects must meet a series of ambitious performance requirements over a minimum of twelve months of continuous occupancy.

The Living Building Challenge and the Living Community Challenge provide frameworks for design, construction and the symbiotic relationship between people and all aspects of the built environment through four Living Building Challenge typologies: Renovation, Landscape and Infrastructure, Building, and Community.

Speaker: Melissa Arminio Kops, AIA, LFA, LEED AP BD+C is a LEED and Living Future Accredited Architect and a Living Building Challenge Ambassador. At Centerbrook Architects, she is the project manager for the South Kent School Center for Innovation project which is attempting Living Building Challenge Certification.
