Join Green Building Alliance for a tour of Homewood’s Bioshelter and Aquaponics Oasis!
On this tour with GBA’s Emerging Professionals, we’ll explore and learn about Oasis Farm and Fishery in Homewood. A one of a kind urban agriculture site with a DC solar-powered greenhouse with hydroponic and aquaponic growing systems that includes a off the grid bioshelter, on-site rainwater capture, and planting areas for crops.
It was built in partnership with the University of Pittsburgh Katz Business School and the Business of Humanity Project in the Spring of 2016. The Aquaponics System contains a deep water culture bed to grow primarily lettuce and herbs, four media beds to grow a variety of vegetables and a 250 gallon fish tank to raise 40 fish.
The Bioshelter provides educational experiences about gardening, aquaponics, green infrastructure, and healthy food preparation. It also provides sustainable revenue streams to support educational and social service programs in Homewood.

The Oasis Project is the community and economic development division of Bible Center Church, Inc. We use research and an asset-based community development approach to create oases- places of peace, safety, and happiness in the midst of trouble and difficulty. The project designs cutting edge programs, builds businesses, creates jobs and adaptively reuses vacant and abandoned property to empower people and transform the community. Children are a distinctive focus of our work because they are the future.
Casey Clauser is the Oasis Farm and Fishery Farm Manager and a resident of Homewood. Casey oversees the food production and growth through the farm’s aquaponics, hydroponics, raised bed and straw bale gardens. Produce grown on the farm is then used at Everyday Cafe, the farm’s partner cafe. He also manages and teaches the farm’s Better Food Better Me program, which teaches youth about growing their own food and creating healthy recipes utilizing the produce grown.
